RiderLink - A WakeWorld
Feature About You, The Riders

February 2001 - Tony Tonso

Interviewed by Joe Umali

Tony Tonso
WW: Let's get the basic stuff out of the way; name, age and location.

TT: Tony Tonso, the ripe old age of 26 and Sacramento-Nor Cali.

WW: What kind of work do you do?

TT: I am a Network Engineer for GAP, Inc. (Yes, they sell clothes but they don't sponsor wakeboarders).

WW: Tell us how you got into wakeboarding.

Tony Tonso
TT: I got into wakeboarding after riding a Skurfer behind a Jetski. I didn't ride for five years and then, bam, like magic, I just started to get opportunities to ride and have never looked back. Of course it helped that I bought a boat.

WW: Who do you ride with?

TT: I mostly ride with people that are in the Sacto area and on the Wake List. Margaret, Tamale, Big Paul, Hendog, Berto, Jeff K, my two little bro's, and of course the better halves of my boys who have them. But I'm not picky. If you can drive a boat and hold a flag, I'll ride with you.

Tony Tonso
WW: Where's your favorite place to ride and what do you like about it?

TT: I'd tell you but I'd have to kill you (laughter). I can't give out that secret, but if the water is flat, I don't care where I am at. That is my favorite place for the moment. What really tops it off for me is if there isn't anybody else there.

WW: What's your favorite trick to watch and do?

TT: A big poked out grab, any of them. As much as I like to learn inverts, I don't enjoy watching them. I like smooth riders with a lot of style. I don't really have a favorite move that I do. I like them all, but I really like it if I take it big and land it clean.

Tony Tonso
WW: What kind of tricks are you working on?

TT: I'm working on a roll to revert, toeside fronts and spins.

WW: What would you tell someone who's just starting out in the sport of wakeboarding?

TT: I would say charge the wake as hard as you can and flatten out. I could always use a good laugh.

Tony Tonso
WW: What do you like most about wakeboarding?

TT: I hope you have a lot of room on this page. I love the feeling of freedom that wakeboarding gives me, looking down at my reflection on glassy water, the feeling of accomplishment after landing a new trick. I could never stop thinking of different things that I love about wakeboarding, so I'll leave it with the smile that it puts on my face.

WW: Any last words?

TT: Just go out and have fun. Your riding and attitude will benefit from it.
